Removable retainers?

i had permanent retainers for 2 years on my upper & lower jaw. then i had to get the upper jaw retainer removed because i needed a root canal. i was given a mouth-guard, something like a clear plastic piece that goes over your teeth.i was instructed to wear this every night, because i was going for holidays and i didn't have time to get my permanent retainers again. now, my parents want me to get removable retainers, and, my orthodontist is saying i have to wear them 24/7 for 3 months. i don't understand why i have to wear it full-time because i already got retainers done, so technically, i should be wearing them for half a day, right?its not like the removable retainers are going to be my very first retainers..please help me?

thanks!

  1. ok well the clear plastic one was a retainer :) and they work really good and are like todays type of retainer.... but i cant understand either why you would be getting metal retainers on after permo, then  clear and you have had your braces off for 2 years?? my question is if the orthodontist used clear retainers on you why would he go back to the old metal style??? my sister is an orthodontist... and she wouldnt do this so i would just tell your ortho you want either clear or permo retainers otherwise you should go to a different ortho.... at you time you should only be wearing them at night or in the day also if you wish :) although i cannot see your teeth but the only reason i could think of for your ortho to give you metal retainers full time is if your teeth have relapsed??? well yer just have a chat with them because this isnt right.
