  1. yes

  2. In some cases landmines are necessary to protect a country from infiltrators. The international community is hypocritical about landmines and other weapons, specially if we take in to account that they never condemned suicide bombing, chemical warfare by Saddam against the Kurds and the barrage of Kassam rockets against Israeli civilian targets. Landmines are just a decoy for the left wing spin doctors who look for cheap rhetoric but do not care about the Arab terror against Israel.

  3. Maybe we should only remove those manufactured in America.

  4. Some important countries - notably the USA, China, India, and Russia, refuse to sign the anti-landmine treaty.  There is overwhelming international consensus against the use of antipersonnel land mines, since they harm more civilians that combatants.  But as long as these huge countries refuse to do the right thing, armies will still use mines, and innocent people will still be killed.

  5. According to the human rights commission they deliberately want the mines to go off and the borders be porus well I really don't think that the mines should not be planted beacause that increases espionage threat to a country specially these days where terrorist threat is increasing by the minute. I mean you go out to your job in the morning and you don't even know whether  you will live to see your family again or not. So My friend International commission prohibits lots of things functioning in a country but very few topics has been resolved, besides the country which is prohibiting land mines are fixing and producing it themselves.

  6. The removal of landmines is essentially a business. There are a number of humanitarian based organisations doing UXO removal, however the large amount of organisations do it for profit. Money to remove mines comes from international donors and is targeted at specific countries. As such, if money is not allocated to remove a countries landmines, the organisations wont be there to remove them.

You are right, the Ottawa Treaty bans the use of mines. All the biggest users and producers have not signed the treaty. It is an ineffective treaty as signatories get around the agreement by calling mines by another term (ie: area denial weapons).

  7. YESSSSSSSSSSSSSSS

  8. remove them at once

  9. As far as neglecting the removal of landmines is concerned, there are efforts to remove them in Vietnam, Cambodia, Afghanistan, and probably many other countries as well.  Most of these projects are being carried out by multi-national organizations.

Landmines have other effects that you have not mentioned.  They prevent civilians from farming their land until their fields have been cleared.  This results in lower agricultural production in some of the most impoverished countries of the world.  They also kill and maim livestock.  For example, if a landmine kills a water buffalo, a dog will smell the rotting animal, go investigate, and get blown up as well.

I have also seen tops of landmines in Cambodia used as chicken feeders.  This particular model resembled a form to make angel food cake and the peasants simply put food for chickens in them.  Good job at re-cycling, huh?

Most landmines are not designed to kill personnel.  They are primarily intended to maim, and hence, demoralize other military personnel.

Landmines could be used along the US side of the Mexican border.  Fences just will not prevent Mexicans from crossing the border illegally.  Landmines have been used successfully for this purpose on other borders.

Landmine use is a very complicated and emotional issue.  There are many ways to look at it.  This topic surely could use more debate.
