Removal of Number plate for retention?

I have a car that i am planning on selling and it currently has a private plate on. I would like to know how long it would take for the number plate to be removed and the original one (or equivelent) to be put back on? Thanks.

It can be done in about 48 hours if you go personally to one of the taxation offices.

If you do it by post it can take up to 14 days.
