ok so i was gone camping for a week and when i got back i saw my dog has ear wax stuck in his ear fur and it goes down deep, i can't cut it, i don't have the money for a grooming visit *i do the grooming* since it is down inside the ear im thinking the best way would be by removing the fur but i don't know what to do to get it out. sissors is a big no no since i might make his ear tickle and force him to shake his head and getting cut and i don't think just pulling it out is a good idea either. i remember watching a grooming tape a bit ago wear a woman had put some sort of white powder in the dog's ear, she said it "softens" the fur or skin, something like that and she waited a few seconds and started to pull the fur out of the ear, the dog didn't flinch but i think he was used to it or they were holding him down pretty well, i want to know what that is, is it safe to put that in the dog's ear and what exactly does it do? if you don't know what else can i do to remove the ear hair?

oh and i don't want this to be a permenant thing i just want that wax out of his ears so i can keep them cleaned.

  1. I would take him to the vet, because a waxy ear can be a sign of an infection.

  2. You should take him to the vet. he may have a serious ear infection. They can also pluck the hair out.

  3. The best thing to do would be take the dog to a groomer and have them pull it out or some times your vet can do it. I would not do it myself it is tooo risky. the powder is to help grab the hair in there, you can take a qtip and gently try to get some wax out but be CAREFUL if your dog isnt that still i wouldnt do it. but you do want to slove the problem so just take her/him to the groomer or vet and have them do it it shouldnt be that much money.

  4. Its called ear powder.  You can get it at most big chain petshops where grooming supplies are sold.

You put the powder in and pull the hair out.. you can use your fingers or a special tool for pulling hair.  I prefer my fingers as the dog never holds perfectly still and I always end up pinching the dog by accident with the grooming tool.. OUCH!

The dog was probably used to the grooming proceedure.  Use lots of praise while doing it.. you may need to reapply powder several times, expecially if the hair is thick or very dirty.

  5. Hi, 11yr professional groomer here..

    2 options.

    1. Buy ear powder (about $7.00-$9.00 at any local pet supply) and buy a pair of Hemostats (they are like tweezers) that lock in the handle. (medical supply that can be found at most CVS,Longs etc) Put the powder in the ear and grab the hair with the hemostats, you can pull it out that way. The ear powder will help make the hair easier to grab and help with the pain the dog will feel. Then after the hair is all out you can wipe the ear with ear wipes, also available at local pet stores.

    2. As a groomer, if someone came in and said their dog had ear hair that needed to be removed but they couldn't afford a grooming. I'd charge you no more than $10 to remove the ear hair for you without a bath or haircut. Call your groomer (or any groomer) and explain the problem, any good, understanding and helpful groomer should do this for you.

A vet will cost you a fortune.

If the ear wax is black/brown and smells bad there is a infection and you'll need a vet but, if it is just clear/slightly yellowish and impacted with hair either of my 2 methods will work.

    Good luck
