The running system is Microsoft Windows XP. Avast has uncovered several ad-ware, spyware, infections, win 32 worm viruses etc..........how should I remove or quarantine them? If myself and my aunt (infected computer) can't remove by ourselves are theree any FREE alternatives to help us? And also I heard a rumor that Limewire is a haven for viruses...etc... can anyone also tell me some programs that also leak in viruses.

  1. AVG Anti Virus Free Version 8.0. It works great and it is free. You can get it from grisoft.com or from download.com. Really, anything that connects to the internet can leak viruses, some more than others. All you can do is keep security software up to date and scan often. Make sure you have a firewall up to keep any intruders from coming in and Windows Defender, default with XP Service Pack 2, also helps with any potentially unwanted software. AVG can help you deal with the viruses and spyware. I also suggest downloading Spybot Search and Destroy: an anti-spyware. Scan often with these security programs and there should be minimal risk. If you have any questions about these, email me.

  2. Open Avast program ang go to settings. Find the "Schedule a boot scan" setting and restart your computer. It will have a blue screen which is the screen for Avast scanning your machine for infections. It will then prompt you what to do if it finds something. It may take a few minutes to scan your machine so bear with it.

  3. Arrrrgh. That makes me shiver. Do yourself a favour, reinstall your OS and immediately after that install a commercial antivirus program, or if you really poor and need to have something free then you will just have to make do.
