We are moving into a new house and in the bathrooms the porcelain tiles that are either hand painted or came with painted flowers. We do not want to re-do all the tiles at this point but we would really like to remove the painted flowers. Is there any thing out there that will remove the flower paint on the tiles but won’t harm the actual tile?

  1. Even if nothing is able to remove the design, you don't have to re-do all the tiles to eliminate a few painted ones.

The individual tiles can be removed and replaced following the instructions here: http://www.thisoldhouse.com/toh/how-to/i...

Assuming the painted ones are merely a few accent tiles, it's actually quite simple, and a fun DIY project for a weekend afternoon.

Most tile comes in standard sizes, and many tile outlets are happy to give you samples to check for a match.

  2. A razor scraper.  You can try lacquer thinner if you think they are painted on.  Lacquer thinner dissolves anything.  It won't harm the tiles.

  3. Try a razor to see if you can scrape the flowers off. If the flowers were fired onto the tiles ,Nothing  will remove the flowers. There are also companies that can Spray a new color over existing tiles.
