Remove plaque from underneath gums?

brushing and flossing is not working and my back gums are really irritated.

  1. Yes you need to see your Hygienist at your dental office. She (and the Dr.) are the only ones that able to clean under the gumline efficiently. You should be going at least every six months, to help keep the build up to a minimum.

If you have a lot of plaque and calculus (calcified plaque) under your gum line (subgingival), you'll need to see a dentist to have root planing.  Root planing is where the dentist or hygienist will use instruments designed to go subgingival to smooth the root and remove the calculus.  The idea behind root planing is to remove the irritation so the body can connect back to the tooth.
