Remove rust.?

Question

I have this bowie knife from at least 15-20 years ago. So at the supermarket what chemical can i buy to remove this VERY deep rust. If coca cola works will coca cola stain the steel. how long do i leave the knife submerged in coca cola soda for will it damage the wood on my blade please help this bowie is a one of a kind beauty i would like to use it for hunting and fishing. It is stainless steel.

I've never cared for the coca cola thing. It just doesn't work for me. I use SOS pads. I scrub all the rust off, then rinse and dry it . After that, I oil it with one tablespoon vegetable oil, rubbing it in well. Then I get a terry towel and buff it.

If you or a friend has a buffing wheel on your grinder.......do it man. Just be careful the wheel doesn't throw it at you. I clean most of the rust off my tools with the wire wheel...and just shine............all the best guy .....nite

WD-40 will do it... it's very cheap and you can buy it on any hardware or DIY shops .

Without knowing where at all you heard some myth about Coke, I suspect you are over stressing. The Rust has already damaged the blade, and I doubt you can do much more harm with carbonation, citric acid, coloring and fructose.

   No offense but STAINLESS must have been subjected to the most extreme conditions on the planet, to rust.

   Given "ONE OF A KIND" I assume it has some heirloom value, or assumed value to you, beyond it's intended functionality. Why wouldn't you assume then, to take it to someone involved in the process of restoration?

if it's rusty it's not stainless if a magnet sticks to it it's not stainless buy some navel jelly at the hardware store to remove the rust

For starters, your knife is not stainless steel.  Stainless steel doesn't rust.  The blade is probably carbon steel.  Soak only the blade in coke.  Let it sit a couple days and check it.  Just keep at it.  Fine emery cloth can be used to sand off the rust.  Polish with Scotch bright pads for a smooth even finish.

Best household product I have used to remove rust is...Toilet Bowl cleaner. Just scrape off any heavy rust...them place the knife blade in a glass with toilet bowl cleaner. You can leave it a hour or two....but don;t leave it too long. Rinse it off good and use a baking soda to counter act the acid...after that apply a little WD-40. You can use some steel-wool to shine it up.
