We had a tree removed and stump ground a little over a year ago. I have no idea what kind of tree it was. It was too close to the house and causing problems. Since then what I assume are saplings, keep growing from the roots that are close to the ground. My husband just keeps mowing over them. But we've also drilled MANY holes and used Stump Out to try and kill everything off, but they keep coming back. What do I do?

  1. Pull the stump.  Grinding it off is the easy way but it is obviously not working. Dig it up and jerk it out.  If it is still growing it means that the root system may still be doing damage to foundations and other structures such as sidewalks and patios etc.  The only sure way is to dig it up and pull it out.

a lot of work but worth not having to think about it any more.

  2. The stump should have had undiluted poison, such as Round-up, Zero etc which consists of Glyphoste, painted on it within a minute of it having been ground down. The poison only needs to be placed just inside the outer ring of the stump as anything within that area is just dead cells anyway. The poison would have than been translocated down to every root. If it is put on later than this the cells would have formed a barrier. If you are drilling than you would need to drill lots of holes all round the stump to ensure all of the roots are effected. Another method would be to cut every sucker as they appear and put poison on the top bit left remaining within a minute of cutting. This a method that has worked for me.

  3. sometimes desperate times call for desperate measures.if all else fails try to find the stump area and pour old oil  or tar in there. it will seep into the root and should kill the entire thing.

  4. As long as you keep mowing then they will eventually die. If there is ample moisture even a completely cut off block of wood can sprout suckers. Take away the moisture and they die. Im assuming you have had alot of rain this summer like the rest of us.
