I asked this a week ago and got a good detailed answer but not specfically what I was looking for.

In the lower end unit of an outboard engine, how do you take out the seals or bushings. The one that is especially difficult is the shift seal/bushing. They are brass.

  1. The shift rod bushings I've dealt with all have a rubber o-ring inside;  it's just the o-ring that needs replacing.  It's kinda tricky getting the old one out, but still easier than the drive shaft seal and way way easier than the propshaft.

    What motor we talkin bout?

  2. get yourself a service manual from iboats.com or Seloc Marine. That should have a lot of diagrams and instructions in it

  3. DEPENDING ON MAKE AND MODEL it's not unusual to need special tools, to remove seals and bushings, bearing races etc.  However I've used the back side of sockets, generic seal drivers, snap-on pullers, and slide hammers, Threaded rod with washers and several nuts has proven useful for getting the old part(s) out.  Mechanics run into this all the time. If you have a manual for the motor your working on, see how they get it out. Good luck!!
