Question:

Removing a dead sago palm?

I have a sago palm in my front yard that needs to be pulled out (it died). I'm thinking we could use a tow strap and pull it out with our truck. Has anbody ever pulled one up...and how difficult was it? The palm is probably about 8" in diameter. Any advice would be appreciated!

  1. I removed and transplanted a sago of a similar size a few years ago. I actually used a shovel and dug the thing up. However, mine was live at the time. If your sago is dead it may be easier to remove. The one I moved was extremely tough to move. I dug at it for about 2 hours, and finally wound up getting it out, but I broke off the roots. You shouldn't have any trouble getting it with your truck. Just don't tie off to your bumper, the darn thing might pull your truck bumper off. Tie off the plant to the frame or tow hitch on your truck and pull. It should come out especially if it's dead.

Are you sure it's dead? I had one sit dormant for over a year before it sprouted leaves.
