Question:

Removing bats from behind shutters

Does anyone know what to do when a family of bats decides to set up home between the window shutters and the house? We actually had a wire mesh covering the area where they could get in, for the purpose of keeping them away, but they actually ripped the wire mesh right off for the purpose of getting in. (These are some pretty determined bats.) These I'm not sure of the exact number, but there's quite a few of them in there. The window is directly over our driveway, and there's a huge pile of bat guano that's directly under the shutter that formed virtually overnight. My guess is we have probably 2-4 per shutter, under two shutters.

I don't want to wait for them to just move out on their own, because I was actually dive-bombed by one one night while I was taking my dog out. It narrowly missed my head several times, and frightened me terribly, though luckily I wasn't scratched or bitten. I'm scared now that one of them will bite someone in our family.

  1. we had a bat in home one time... hanging RIGHT over our staircase.

i used the back stairs from then on, and made sure to be extra quiet.

so my uncle whacked it with a broom.

    haha.

kinda mean, but it gets the job done, huh?

we also had one in our pool room one time. people always say that they dont attack, but they do! haha. he flew straight at me and my aunt both... we had ceiling tiles propped up against the wall, so my aunt grabbed one and put it over her head, screaming and running away. lol. it was quite a sight to see.

is there any way you could use a broom? lol.

or maybe get a  loud horn or something...

im not sure, since i dont know how high up off the ground they are or whatnot...

  2. We had bats in our attic once, and we spread mothballs and moth flakes around the area. They left!

Not sure how you can get the mothballs or flakes to stay in position on a vertical surface, but if you can find a way, it should work.

Hope this helps, and remember that bats are good to have around, as they eat lots of insects! Sometimes people put up houses, like birdhouses, for bats.
