Question:

Removing lawn without damaging the trees?

I'd like to use a chemical like Roundup to remove a weedy and unhappy lawn and replace it with a more natural landscape. There is a large tree that covers about half the lawn and has roots that stretch out beneath it.

Will the Roundup sprayed onto the lawn possibly harm the tree? Has anyone tried this with good results? The Roundup sounds like an easier solution than covering the grass (3-6 months wait time) or using a sod stripper.

Thanks in advance.

  1. Roundup will work fine if you don't let the spay get on the roots.  You don't say how old the tree is or weather the roots are above ground.  I've used it numerous times with no problems.  Just do it on a day when there is little or no wind so you don't get it on other vegetation you want to keep.  Good luck.

  2. Roundup will kill the weeds and grass WITHOUT harming the tree or it's roots.  Just be sure there are NO "suckers" coming off the bas of the tree when you spray it.
