Removing old wall heater what to do with the gas line?

ok i baught a house that had an old gas wall heater that we are taking out along with the gas heater in the bathroom and putting in an electic water heater so the only tthing that will be is electric is my stove so i need to know is what do we have to do to the gas lines? can we cap them and bury them in the wall or something? my father in law says we will undo all the pipes and configure one line to the stove and thats it but when he says "we" it means that its just going to be my husband and i. and we have no idea what to do. and i really dont want this project to take to much longer!

  1. Remove the valves, apply plpe joint compound, cap, test for leaks, close the wall.


  2. If you have either a black iron or copper tubing gas line, either can be capped off. What you can do if the pipe is the black iron is, unscrew it then go under the house and put in a 3" piece of the same dia. pipe with a cap on the end. You have got to either use a Teflon plumbers tape or what's called "Pipe Dope" to seal the threads, otherwise the gas company can red flag your repair and turn your gas off.

    If you have copper tubing, just push it back through the floor or as far as you can and again, there are caps for copper also. You may need a male threaded flare fitting and then a cap on it, and again use the teflon tape or dope.

  3. install a ball valve and place a cap on the end of the line. do not bury the line behind the wall. if you are the next people ever need it it will still be there.

  4. you don't want plugged up gas pipes in your wall ,better to disconnect at or near the source ,and cap them there ,you can leave empty pipes in the wall..............tom

  5. cap it off
