Question:

Removing pain off radiator?

My new place has beautiful copper hot water radiators but several coats of paint are hiding the designs and the metal. How do I get all the paint off them? I've tried sanding and scraping without much success. Help! Thanks.

  1. Turn off the valves at both ends, and remove, leave the radiator with a specialist metal fabrication & refinishing company, and explain to them that you wish to have the coatings removed so that the copper metal is showing in all it's glory.    You are lucky indeed to have such a rare item.

Metalworkers will either sand blast , or dip to remove the paint, then burnish to a high sheen,

When refitted the copper will oxidize to a lovely red.

With a piece like this , you probably don't have the equipment to get it to the appearance of the professionals.

  2. Depending on the type of paint (if not heat resistant) best tool to use is a heat gun.  It melts the paint and all you have to do is use a scraper and the gun at the same time comes off like butter.

  3. you probaby need to use a special paint remover like nitremors it stinks and is a bit tricky to use but it will remove the paint dont scrape it off because you might damage the copper underneath

  4. get to a hardware store ... you need a paint remover ... ask them to help you .  good luck .

  5. It won't be a cheap fix, but you can locate a company that can do it for you.  If you want to do it yourself try removing the radiator, plug up the holes, paint on a water soluable paint stripper, and pressure wash the residue off.  Good luck.
