i have an angora rabbit that has matted fur above his tail, on his sides and under his chin. Im scared of cutting the matts out because i might cut his skin. I am thinking of getting him done by a proffessional groomer. Are proffessional groomers okay for rabbits?

  1. Angoras are beautiful rabbits, but they are alot of work when it comes to grooming.  If your rabbit is matted, it sounds like you need to become a little more diligent in your grooming routine.

We raise fuzzy lops (another wool breed), and some have more of a felted texture to their fur.  Once they start molting, some require a daily brushing or they mat like crazy.

If you are very nervous about it, you can check with a local groomer and see if they are willing and able to groom your rabbit.  But for an angora, leaving the maintenance up to a groomer is going to get VERY expensive.  You might want to take him to the groomer this time and then work to keep up with it.

If one of our rabbits develops a mat (which does happen sometimes, despite regular grooming), I use a pair of cuticle scissors to carefully cut the mat off in layers.  If you're careful and cut the surface layer of a mat, often times, the hair underneath is not matted, and can be brushed out.  Don't cut close to the skin and you should be able to learn how to correct this problem yourself.

    Hope this helps!

  2. yes because have very similar far to pets like poodles so they tend to be trained in that area.

  3. You can also use a mat breaker. It has blades on one side and you use it like a comb. http://www.mysimon.com/9015-10992_8-2959...

Or if the mats are smaller you can pull them apart with your fingers. Just make sure to hold the fur next to the body so that you are not pulling the skin too badly.

This is a 4 part series that really shows some good angora grooming tips.

  4. Groomers are okay, But the bunny will get very scared. Make sure you hold him while its being done.

And you need to brush him everyday to prevent mats.
