Removing recoverable files?

I wanted to remove the files that I have deleted but can still be recovered. Is there a traditional method (without using application software) to remove these files?

  1. 'Deleting' removes the markers of the files for overwriting, but the files remain. The only way to destroy their traces is to overwrite them. Since it's invisible, and not absolute, you're much better off with an application like http://www.heidi.ie/node/6.

  2. There really isn't a way to do it without software unless you want to physically break your hard drive layers.
