Question:

Removing suckers on tomato plants?

Hello all. I've been making sure to remove all the suckers on my tomato plant over the season, but somehow I missed one and it has become a massive side-branch. Would it be detrimental for me to snip off this branch (it's about 30 cm / 1' long) at this stage? Would it affect the plant's growth in any way?

  1. No, It won`t hurt. You can prune a tomato plant easily. They are very hardy once established. I sucker mine all the way until august (even the ones I missed,LOL), then let them start growing for fall tomatoes. I usually have tomatoes until thanksgiving, or so. I also plant some suckers for another round of plants.

  2. I've grown tomatoe plants since I was a kid and I'm no kid anymore, but the answer to your question is "No, cutting that one foot sucker off your plant won't hurt it at all. In fact, it is doing the plant no good because it is depriving the plant of some useful moisture needed more in the fruit.

  3. Snip away!!!!! No problem with harming the plant.

  4. No, go ahead and cut it off. It's just taking away from the rest of the plant.
