Removing sun bleaching

Question

My liver chestnut mare has a little bit of sun bleaching on her back from being in the sun a lot.

I am now putting a sheet on her to stop it from happeing more but i was wondering if there is anything i can do to remove that damage thats all ready been done?

Like a shampoo or something. or will it go away with time?

As her coat naturally changed for the seasons, that bleaching will disappear.  There are color repairing shampoos, but I haven't had much luck with them.  You can use a horse sunscreen and conditioner to help smooth the hair back down and repair some of the damage.  Mostly though, time will fix it.

You can't remove the bleaching but you can help keep their coats dark before they start to bleach out!  As someone previously mentioned, you can use Black as Knight to keep their coats dark, but I personally use paprika (yes, the spice you can find in the grocery store).  It is the main ingredient in Black as Knight but much cheaper to give to your horse.

I also have a liver chestnut and I have been using it the last couple of years to keep his coat dark.  He does get a little lighter in the summer, but not like he used to.

I just sprinkle a little on his feed or even treats (he loves the stuff, will l**k it out of my hand) daily and it works great.

Just remember that if you are going to show and your horse needs to pass a drug test you have to stop giving it to him a few weeks in advance as it does show up on a drug test.

she will get lighter in the summer from the sun, but it should darken again once it comes winter. My horse is the same way. She lightens in the summer (sometimes in several spots) and will eventually go back to her darker color in the winter. I don;t think there is anything you can do to remove the discoloration.

Hey, for most show horses in the summer, people use night turnout.  If you switch your horses turnout to night time when there is no sun, there wont be any bleaching.  It keeps their coat looking shiny, unbleached and healthy. So it is as simple as leaving your mare in during the day.

You can try feeding a little bit of Black As Knight feed supplement. It helps to keep the coat from sun bleaching and helps prevent sunburn. It works great on pink skinned or mottled horses, and keeps their faces from getting burnt.

You can buy some special shampoos to help with the hair. There is also some kind of feed through supplement that you can feed her. Eventually it will go away though. Keeping a sheet on her will help or keeping her indoors during the day and out at night is even better.
