Removing tarter at the dentist?

I have dark brown stuff on the bottom on my bottom teeth. But its only a little. Is it tarter? will it hurt to get off at the dentist? Im going today.

  1. This is tartar or calculus. the dentist or even better, his hygienist will remove this at your cleaning appointment.  It can be White, black or brown and can be above or below the gum.  It is imperative that it is removed at regular intervals so that you do not develop gum disease.  The hygienist will use a scaler to remove the calculus and she is well trained to be gentle.  Relax, it is a good thing to get all of that out of there and it feels fabulous when it is gone!

I was a dental assistant for a while, and if the dentist decides to remove any excess plaque or tarter, they use a small instrument that it similar to the one they use while seeing if any of your teeth are loose or if you have cavities.  (It looks almost like a double-sided hook).  It doesn't hurt, it may just be uncomfortable because of the sound.
