Question:

Removing unwanted new grass from an existing lawn?

Last year I decided to redo my entire lawn. Killed all existing growth , tilled the soil, added fertilizers and put in new seeds. The lawn seemed perfect this spring. Unfortunately, I have some new grass growing within the new grass and it seems to be spreading real fast all over. How can I control this new grass which looks far different (color and blade width) from what was intended. Seems like all my effort will go in vain by the time this season is though. Pls advise what my options could be. Thanks.

  1. It  sounds like crabgrass.  You can spray with something designed to kill the crabgrass but not the desirable grass - something like Weed-be-gone.  Read the label carefully to see that it does not kill the variety of grass you planted.  Then you should be sure to mow high and water deeply, but not too often.  This will discourage crabgrass.  In the spring, by the middle of April, you can apply a preemergent herbicide which will keep the crabgrass from growing next year.  Scott's calls it 'Crabgrass Preventer' but there are other brands.  Corn gluten is an organic alternative.
