Remy Fairweather and Ieuan Lloyd dominate swimming events at the 2011 Commonwealth Youth Games
Remy Fairweather and Ieuan Lloyd won the Women’s 800m freestyle and Men’s 200m freestyle meet respectively, on the first day of the 2011 Commonwealth Youth Games. The event took place on September 9 at Isle of Man.
Fairweather occupied the crown of the distant freestyle swim by clocking a fastest time of 8 minutes and 26.63 seconds. She was followed by Leah Neale of Australia, who remained nearly 10 seconds behind Fairweather and posted a nice team of 8 minutes and
36.02 seconds for the silver medal. The third position of the event was earned by Michelle Weber of South Africa, who remained 2.24 seconds slower than her competitor and clocked a time of 8 minutes and 38.26 seconds for the bronze medal.
Moments later, the arena sighted Sian Morgan of Wales, who was almost three seconds slower than the bronze medallist and ended her swim in a time of 8 minutes and 41.03 seconds. She was followed by Sycerika McMahon of Northern Ireland, as she was only 0.07
seconds slower than Morgan and reported in a fifth fastest time of 8 minutes and 41.10 seconds. Fiona Donnelly of Scotland surfaced as the sixth finisher of the event, producing a time of 8 minutes and 45.49 seconds.
In the meantime, Lloyd captured the title of Men’s freestyle swim, where he produced a fine time of 1 minute and 47.28 seconds. With his title claiming effort, he remained 1.25 seconds ahead of his subsequent rival, Matthew Hutchins of New Zealand, who concluded
his swim in a time of 1 minute and 48.53 seconds for the silver medal. Jarrod Poort of Australia transpired as the third fastest finisher of the event, by producing a time of 1 minute and 49.32 seconds for the bronze medal.
The podium finishers were chased by Adam Rowe of England, who was just a touch away from the bronze medallist and finished his swim in a time of 1 minute and 49.71 seconds for fourth position. Rowe remained almost half second ahead of his closest competitor,
Joshua Romany of Trinidad and Tobago, who touched the wall in 1 minute and 50.22 seconds for fifth spot. Subsequently, 18-year-old Scottish swimmer, Alisdair Stirling emerged on the concluding wall for the sixth finest spot of the freestyle event, by submitting
a time of 1 minute and 50.58 seconds.
Fairweather and Lloyd were happy with gold claiming efforts in their respective events, while they also expressed an aim of repeating the same performance at senior levels of international swimming. Furthermore, podium finishers collected their medals after
the completion of the meet.
