This is a question from my AP European History assignment, and I answered it. I don't know if my answer is correct.

How did the subject matter of art change in the 15th century?

The subject matter of art changed in the 15th century as individuals and oligarchs sponsored works of art that glorified their families. This caused more works of art lie chapels, frescoes, religious panels, and tombs to be made only for specific families rather than the general public.

Thanks for the help.

  1. I think they would be looking for an answer that had to deal with art changing from christianity-focused into something that embraced the science and knowledge of the time.  This is when the rules of perspective were invented, and painting took on a more "realistic" look.

  2. I think art changed because the theme of the art changed, not because it was sponsored. People patronised artists but that was not why it changed. Rennaisance brought Humanism into European art. Artists potrayed life as it is in common, not like their previous artists. Rennaisance artists drove their themes and inspirations from the human life they saw around. Even Biblical scenes were painted with a human side. Their philosophy was that Life should be celebrated and lived to its full, unlike the Church which always taught that this life is a punishment for the Original Sin and so should not be enjoyed.

Patronage was also common. Kings and Nobles commisioned artists to paint for them as we see the rise of so many potrait painters. But, I think, thats not the original cause for shift in art. It came later on.
