Renaldo Hill furious about costly pass interference call
Denver Broncos defensive back Renaldo Hill has publicly spoken out about how he believes he was unjustly flagged for pass interference on a crucial play late in the Broncos 24-20 loss to the New York Jets on Sunday, October 17.
The play in question occurred on fourth and six from the Broncos 48-yard line with the Jets looking to keep their drive going late in the game.
Jets quarterback Mark Sanchez launched the ball long toward the end zone for Santonio Holmes, who couldn't come up with the catch. With Hill getting flagged on the play for pass interference, it moved the ball to the spot of the foul (the Broncos 2-yard
line in this case) and gave the Jets an automatic first down. LaDainian Tomlinson ran the ball in for the score on the very next play and the Jets won the game.
"I thought I looked back for the ball, I felt a little tug, and that's what kind of got me off balance," Hill said about the play on Monday. "I don't know that I would do anything differently in that situation."
Hill maintains that any contact made between him and Holmes was accidental. As Holmes attempted to make the catch, Hill appeared to grab Holmes' face mask.
"We were both falling at that point," Hill said. "And I was in front of him. So, I don't really know what other way I could have done it."
With a game in which receivers were getting called for interference more than defenders, Hill alluded to the fact that when he saw the flag thrown on the play, he thought Holmes would be the one called for interference.
"It's one of those things that stings," Hill added, "but I can't let it linger for too long."
