Renault CEO Carlos Ghosn terms engine supplier role a much better approach – Formula 1 news
In an interview at the inaugural 2011 Indian Grand Prix at the Buddh International Circuit in the Greater Noida area, Renault chief Carlos Ghosn revealed his plans to extend the Enstone-based factory’s engine deal with more Formula 1 teams, following its
team’s recent race performances.
Ghosn has termed his company’s new strategy of becoming only the engine suppliers as a “much better approach.”
The French engine suppliers will not be having an official Formula 1 outfit in their name in the next season as a result of which the main concern for Renault will only be to provide engines for the teams.
Speaking on its renewal of partnership with Williams, Ghosn said, “They have a strategy that they are sharing with us, and we think that by supplying them with engines it is going to help them reposition themselves in a much better place into the competition.”
The reason why Renault has chosen to provide engines to Williams is that it thinks the teams has far greater potential that what it has been using and thus with Renault as its partner for next season the team is expected to accelerate its performance by
leap and bounds.
While speaking to Autosport.com, Ghosn said, “When you have one team, and when the team wins, you are doing great, but when the team is not having a great performance then you are doing less great.”
With this new vision and philosophy, Renault will now be able to sustain its brand image in a much better way. With F1 racing, there is so much of uncertainty involved, whether or not the team wins or loses one can never predict the outcome. Renault does
not identify its presence in Formula 1 with victories nor do they link themselves up with the mainstream racing. They feel better off in their role as engine supplier.
Renault has recently inked partnerships with four teams for 2012 and its main goal for the next season will be to contribute to the success of these teams and possibly add more teams under it’s umbrella in the next few seasons.
He has also refuted news that Renault might be re-branded as Infiniti in the near future.
