Hi to all have the above car and the tensioner failed and the belt jumped a few teeth ,took the head off and all 16 valves hit pistons, the valves are not too bent as i was getting about 4 bar compression in each cylinder, will i get away with the pistons if i get the head sorted out........

  1. The pistons and con rods are stronger than the valves and I have never had to replace the pistons after a cambelt failure on this engine. But check the valves guides as these can become oval-ed after hitting the pistons. Replace the valves and all should be OK

  2. well i had two scenic's in last 4 months both cam belts gone on 1.4 16 valve 2000 and 2001 and both had holes in pistons just my luck as i work for renault and i buy broken cars to fix and give to missus to run for abit so i had to put two new engines lucky only costing  Ã‚£200 and £225 for other engine were as only costing me £120 for fixing bent valves not including labour which is free as i am doing it.

so very good luck to you as i have had no luck on these 1400 16 valve engines must admit never done a 1400 at work but every other type of engine i have done all been ok so depends on speed you were doing and YOUR LUCK

  3. if the valves have hit the pistons they're bent, pressure should be about 12 bars, take the valves out and run them up in a lathe or a drilling machine, if a valve facer is not available, to see if they are bent, the engine is not going to run at 60 psi, it's most unlikely that the pistons are damaged.

  4. As long as a piston is not holed it will be ok.Hope this helps
