I have bought a Renault Megane Coupe 1.6 Sport... I'm looking for ways of making the car a little faster on acceleration as it just seems there isnt enough umpfff!!!! I dont want the thing to be mad, but just a few cheap ways of making it go that much quicker upto about 70-80mph....

Any suggestions would be great! Thanks

  1. i think you have 8 valve engine which is poor as others have said big air filter about £ 30 will increase hp by about 10 . A cold air induction kit will help about £40 to £ 80 or some pipe and scoops and do it your self so cold air from in front of car is directed into manifold through a big air filter this again will increase hp by about 4 - 8. a cheap chip which fools the engine in to thinking engine is cold all the time so more petrol is put into engine will add about 5 hp but use more petrol these chips are about £ 2.00 more dearer chips can cost up to £150 but have more programmes that you can alter. re mapping is going to cost £100 to £300 not worth doing for this engine. exhaust back box will add 8 hp and sound nice £25.00 with hassle trying to fix or £50.00 or more fits nice and easy. de cat will add another 5 hp  about £ 40.00 but will not pass  mot test.

what i done is big air filter rear exhaust box and de cat  (the best acceleration gain )on my old 1.6 8 valves and i had 4 coupes and i cabriolet and they sound faster and did go quicker but i got fed up because only way forward was to buy a 2.0  megane cabriolet and boy is that quick and now  very quick since done all mods to it hope that helps look on e bay and buy some bits you should get them for under £ 100 have a play and buy a 2.0 when you have some more money

  2. Everything JY says is good, i would have said it if he (or she) didn't.

Seeing as you are not looking for a massive top end speed, fitting smaller wheels will improve your acceleration. It won't look all that pretty, but sacrifices need to be made sometimes.

The other thing is to reduce weight as much as possible. Weight kills acceleration. Don't go fitting massive sound systems, or keeping your boot full of junk. Sacrifice the back seats (it's not like anyone can fit in the back anyway), and most importantly, don't give your fat mate a lift.

Also, fancy body kits may look cool, but they destroy the aero, and cooling of your car.

  3. Petrol cars are hard to tune cheaply.

1.) Buy an induction kit (air filters etc) and get a sports exhaust fitted. I found this improved acceleration just slightly.

    2.) Sport chip.

We're only talking minimal BHP increases; 10BHP maximum.

Perhaps spend a bit more and get the computer remapped? I've heard a few crazy French people dropped either the 1.4 R5 Turbo or the 3L V6 engine in as well. Check out your local breakers yard, you might be able to pull out a V6 engine from an old Laguna?

If this sounds to much hassle just bide your time and buy a quicker car next time.

    Best of luck.
