Renault Sport working with customers in order to find solution to alternator problems – Formula 1
Renault Sport has busy working with its clients in order to better understand and resolve the issue they were recently introduced to during the European Grand Prix.
Red Bull and Lotus cars endured the issue which led to both cars failing on their drivers resulting in loss of vital points in the season.
Sebastian Vettel was dominating the race and was on his way to the second Grand Prix win of the season if the engine of his car had not failed on him.
Romain Grosjean was the Lotus driver who suffered similar consequences due to his car’s Renault engine failing and ending his race.
Since Renault Sport has been investigating the reason behind the failure and it was revealed that the issue lay in the alternators of the cars. The alternators had overheated in both the cars and that is what triggered the failure.
Head of trackside operations Remi Taffin said that its customers had all worked closely in order to find the right solution to the issue.
“It's been a very busy time since Valencia,” Taffin said. “Not only is Silverstone a big challenge in terms of the demands placed on the engine, but we have also been investigating the cause of the issues we had during the last race with the alternators.
Everyone at Viry has been flat out making sure that we fully understand the causes of the failures. It's something our teams have been actively helping us with as well; we have been looking at various solutions such as increased cooling to the alternator,
running it less severely and changing the part entirely. In all situations we are putting in place solutions to ensure we are fully ready for Silverstone and that the same issue does not happen again.”
Silverstone is a circuit that puts a heavy toll on the engines and it will test Renault engines too during the race. The teams certainly cannot afford to lose any more points over technical issues.
It will be interesting to see how both teams drivers perform at Silverstone. The race is scheduled for July 8, 2012.
