Renault director Rob White says V6 engines still unknown to teams – Formula 1 news
Renault’s deputy managing director Rob White recently stated that the new V6 engines that will become a part of Formula 1 in 2014 are still ‘unknown’ as the teams and the engine suppliers do not know what they can achieve and how these engines will perform
as compared to the current V8 engines.
“From 2014, we have new regulations with a new family of engines. In fact, we should not simply talk about engines but power units... the 1.6 litre V6 turbocharged engines, bigger KERS (Kinetic Energy Recovery System) unit, electric power in the pits etc.
It is something of an unknown,” he said.
The International Automobile Federation (FIA) recently announced that the teams will shift to V6 engines from the current V8 engines in 2014 as those engines will be more environment-friendly as a result of which the fuel costs of the sport will drop massively
as well.
These new engines are going to be turbo charged and up until now, it is believed that this is the final plan for these major 2014 regulation changes despite the fact that the chief of Formula 1 Management Bernie Ecclestone is against ‘electrical engines.’
“I guess when we moved years ago to the other direction, from turbocharged to naturally aspirated engines, there was a difference that we got used to. The introduction of turbochargers and reduction of revs will result in less noise,” said White.
Nevertheless, White also stated that these engines will be ‘special’ and that the officials and the fans should not worry about anything as the development process is in the right hands.
Ecclestone and many others are concerned about the fact that with the revolutions limit reduction, the noise of the engine will also be compromised which is something they do not want since that noise creates the ‘Formula 1 environment’ which the fans love
the most.
If that noise is taken away from the Formula cars, then the outcome at each venue might reduce as well which is something the officials of the sport do not want at all at the moment.
