Renault driver Robert Kubica will not be available for 2012 season – Formula 1 news
Robert Kubica has told Renault that he will not be returning to Formula 1 for the start of the 2012 season.
Kubica following a horrible accident sustained serious injuries at the start of the 2011 season and has ever since been going through rehabilitation process in order to make a comeback. Various reports were circulating about his return for the 2012 season.
Renault though understood the nature of the situation and said that they would wait for their driver to recover, and would like to see him race for them.
Kubica’s management though initially announced that they predicted a return for the driver for the 2012 season, and with Renault drawing the facts from the situation became wary of his return.
Amid all the speculation going on for some time, Kubica has now revealed that he will not be fit for the initial part of the season.
“Even if I've been working very, very hard over the course of the last few weeks, I came to the conclusion that I am not yet certain to be ready for the 2012 season,” he said in a statement.
“I have called the team and I have informed them of the situation. This was a difficult decision to make, but it is the most reasonable one. I also know that LRGP [Lotus Renault Grand Prix] need to prepare for next year and further extending deadlines would
not have been the right thing to do,” he further added.
However, he remained positive over the progress of his recovery, which he said is very encouraging and the doctors are quite impressed. However, he needs to be one hundred percent fit to race which he is not at the start of the 2012 season.
Renault will now look into finding a replacement for Kubica. They were already in talks with GP2 champion Romain Grosjean as a backup for exactly the situation they have found themselves in. Bruno Senna, the current driver though is looking to extend his
contract, whether Renault keeps him or goes for Grosjean remains to be seen.
