Renault eager to supply engines for more Formula 1 teams in 2012 – Formula 1 news
One of the leading engine suppliers of Formula 1, Renault have recently announced that they are willing to supply even more teams with engines in 2012.
They are already the engine suppliers for three teams and in 2012, Williams would be joining the list as the fourth team.
“Our strategy hasn't changed. We have refocused our operations to supplying engines. I am very happy with this as something I am trying to achieve with the teams within Renault is that we concentrate on the essentials and not spread ourselves too thinly,” Renault’s Chief Operating Office Carlos Tavares told Renault Sport.
There are rumours that Hispania Racing Team are also currently in consultation with Renault regarding a possible contract as a result of which Renault seems quite eager for even more teams.
Currently, they are supplying engines for the championship leaders Red Bull Racing, Lotus Renault GP and Team Lotus. Other than engines, Renault also supplies power units.
“That four teams are coming to us to supply their engines and we have the ability to satisfy them is very positive. If we have to supply more partners I would not be opposed to it. As we have more partners we dilute our costs,” he added.
One has to admit that engine suppliers nowadays have a huge impact on the teams’ cars. The engine characteristics play a key role in the team’s car development process throughout the season.
We can say that Renault should also be credited for Red Bull’s success as their car is reliant on aerodynamics and the characteristics of the Renault engines they are using support that kind of a feature. As a result, they can really play around with their cars during their development and come up with the best possible setups for each race.
Nevertheless, 2014 is going to bring about a major change and until then, Renault is going to try its best to gather as many teams as they can in order to secure their future in the sport as well.
