Renault team boss Eric Boullier says they are happy to race in Bahrain if safe – Formula 1 news
Renault team boss Eric Boullier has said that the Formula 1 world will be happy to race in Bahrain at any part of the year, if the security conditions are satisfactory.
Boullier also said that if he was to decide about the Bahrain GP, he would have decided against it given the current conditions prevailing in the country.
Boullier stated, “If, security is guaranteed; if the foreign ministries in England allow us to travel there; we will be happy to race there. But the next question would be in the political context - do we have to race there?”
Boullier added that not only the security issue must be addressed but also the fact that in an already congested 2011 Formula 1 calendar, why is there a need to host the Bahrain race.
Boullier further commented that if he was to decide about the Formula 1 future in Bahrain he would think against all odds.
“At the end, if I have to balance it, I have to support the idea of racing - but I also have to say that it also maybe not fair to go race there this year. So there is a little bit of a balance to find,” stated Boullier.
Bahrain was officially allowed to host the season-opening race of the 2011 calendar. However, poor political and security conditions stripped it of the hosting rights. If the Bahrain GP takes place at some point of the year, the total number of races in
the season would reach 20.
However, since the time the Bahrain GP was postponed, Formula 1 supremo Bernie Ecclestone has been saying that the race will definitely take place in the year.
Unfortunately, Bernie was the only one as many Formula 1 teams said that 20 races in one season will not only increase the cost but will also put additional pressure on the drivers and teams.
Organisers of the Bahrain GP have a deadline of June 1, 2011 to decide about their future.
The 2011 season continues in Spain on May 22 with the fifth race of the season.
