Renault technical head James Allison hoping for some positive upgrades at 2011 Italian Grand Prix
Lotus Renault GP’s technical director James Allison has recently stated that he is hoping for some positive results at the upcoming Italian Grand Prix after some upgrades.
“Like everyone, we will have a low downforce package. We will also bring upgraded bodywork, which hopefully will help us build on the gains we made at Spa... We have an upgrade package to deliver for Monza and then one more at Singapore. After that it will
reduce to a trickle as we focus all of our efforts on next year,” he said.
The team was able to outperform Mercedes GP at the Belgian Grand Prix as Vitaly Petrov finished in 9th place while the two Mercedes GP drivers Michael Schumacher and Nico Rosberg finished in 5th and 6th
places respectively and picked up important championship points.
The Spa-Francorchamps is a pretty technical track and since the conditions were quite unpredictable there as well, it seems that Renault are trying to take the advantage now after the one month long summer break but one has to admit that defeating a team
like Mercedes GP is not going to be easy at all.
“It is impossible to produce downforce without producing drag, but the job of the aerodynamicists is to produce as much downforce, for as little drag, as possible,” said Allison.
Nevertheless, the team recently reached a settlement with Nick Heidfeld and will have Bruno Senna drive for them until the end of the 2011 season.
This is a pretty good chance for the young Senna to prove himself and Renault can also avail this opportunity in understanding the young talent of Formula 1 which is indeed the future of the sport as well.
The team is still trying to improve its performance this year though and since there is a 30-point difference between Renault and Mercedes GP in the constructors’ standings, it seems that Renault might not be able to catch up with them this year especially
since they do not have as much pace as Ross Brawn’s team does currently.
