Renault’s Nick Heidfeld admits his mistake in Friday Free Practice crash in China – Formula 1
The 33-year-old German driver, Nick Heidfeld while commenting about his Friday Practice session crash in China, admitted that the car was going well and he crashed by pushing the performance too hard.
Nick commented that he just pushed the car over the limit in the corner which is why he went off the track twice in one day.
This is the second Grand Prix in a row that the Renault team have crashed in the Friday practice sessions. In Malaysia both R31’s crashed due to a suspension failure, but in China Nick was responsible for the crash, as Vitaly Petrov enjoyed a smooth run
in his R31.
Nick commented about the crash, “It was a driving mistake. I went off twice and that can happen - I just went over the limit. Unfortunately I destroyed two wings, it shows it isn't easy today but it is not meant to be an excuse.” The German regarded it as
a bad day and said that in his long career, he has never crashed the car twice on the same day.
The first wing, which Heidfeld broke, was the new one while the second was the conventional wing which the team was left with.
The Renault team has shown some good competitiveness in the 2011 Formula 1 season so far as they have two back-to-back third finishes in the opening two races and both drivers have been there once. Renault is currently fourth in the Constructors table with
30 points.
“I was quite positive about it after P1 because I did two timed lap and I ended up in P5, unfortunately in the second session it didn't look quite as good. I did a few more laps and ended up in 8th position,” commented the German, who is in the Renault team
replacing the injured Robert Kubica.
Heidfeld scored his first podium with the Renault team in Sepang when he did a good job to get ahead of four drivers in the first turn of the race.
Renault’s car has shown good pace in the first two races, but crashes will make life tough for them in a long and tiring 2011 season.
