Renault’s Nick Heidfeld not a fan of DRS, says Pirelli decisive for overtaking – Formula 1 Update
German driver, Nick Heidfeld, has spoken against the Drag reduction System (DRS) and said that Pirelli tyres are more decisive in overtaking manoeuvres. Heidfeld added that DRS takes out the natural feature of Formula 1 car and makes it more artificial.
Nick, who replaced Robert Kubica in Renault team, said, “I’m not a fan of the rear wing because I don’t particularly like things which artificially aim to improve racing. The biggest difference is the tyres.”
He further explained that if the tyres are all worn out, DRS will not help to improve race speed, whereas, if the tyres are fresh, DRS will not be needed as the pace is much more than that of worn out Pirelli tyres.
Not a lot of drivers would agree to Heidfeld’s idea about DRS, as previously Nico Rosberg of Mercedes termed DRS as the best innovation in Formula 1 which improves over-taking. Apart from Rosberg, a report said that almost 150 overtaking moves were completed
in the opening three races of the 2011 season.
Heidfeld, though, still thinks that DRS is useless and takes out the natural flavour of Formula 1 race.
The German has one podium finish in the 2011 season so far and is coping well with his team. Talking about the performance of the team, Nick said that podium positions are good, but work is still to be done.
Heidfeld added, “The first three races gave us a good picture of our strengths and weaknesses, and with the break we’ve just had we’ve been able to analyse where we can improve further.”
He further added that the environment in the team is good and he is blending in well with everyone in the outfit. Nick said that Renault team gives the opportunity to develop as a driver and also, as a team member.
The next race is around the corner and Renault team have done well so far this season, with two podium finishes and 32 points on the constructor’s table.
