Rendall Munroe will return
Despite his world title defeat last week at the hands of Toshiaki Nishioka, Rendall Munroe has vowed to return to the ring as he eyes up another world championship shot.
The boxing binman was unfortunately outclassed on the night by a fine technical display from the Japanese craftsman and has had to go away and ask himself some difficult questions regarding his career.
However Munroe doesn’t see this as the end, the Super bantamweight said recently; “We'll go back to the drawing board and look at a few things,
"You can always improve on everything. People say I am very strong at the weight but that can be improved.”
The Leicester fighter will now have a better understanding of what it takes to compete at world class level and has already picked out the aspects of his all-round performance that need improving. The former European champion said; “Foot movement can be improved and I had already been working on my hand speed. That had stepped up to what it was."
"As long as you don't start going backwards there is nothing to worry about.
"I think everybody can see that Rendall Munroe is improving no end – it is a different Munroe at the end of the year to the one that started 2010.”
There is no denying Munroe has improved a great deal. When he first arrived on the scene it looked like European level might be a bit of stretch for him and now he has world titles in his sights. Ever since his 2006 defeat to Andy Morris, Munroe has gone from strength to strength and says he has seen the improvement himself; "I've looked at films and DVDs from when I first started fighting and the change is phenomenal. I still believe that in 2011 I will be a world champion.”
The challenge for “2 Tone” now is to get back in the saddle. He needs a decent fight; the most obvious one would be Jason Booth. Booth and Munroe have always vowed never to fight because of their friendship, but having both been British world title contenders in recent weeks the fight makes sense as a good stepping stone straight back up.
Failing that it would be good to see Munroe get a solid domestic fighter and top European level bout under his belt just to build up confidence and then look towards another world champion.
