Rene Adler nearing Leverkusen departure - Bundesliga News
Bayer Leverkusen goalkeeper, Rene Adler, has hinted at his departure during the upcoming January transfer window, with the Werkself rivals, Hamburger SV, reportedly interested in the shot-stopper.
Adler had a poor start to the 2011/12 season with an injury that forced him out of action for an indefinite period. The goalie is set to miss another month out of action and with the permanent signing of Bernd Leno, Adler’s inclusion in the line-up could
be in serious doubt.
Leverkusen’s stand in keeper, Fabian Giefer, also suffered from a concussion during the club’s opening game of the season and was later ruled out of action for a three-month period. Giefer’s injury forced the Werkself officials to make emergency signing
of Bernd Leno from VfB Stuttgart.
Having impressed one and all with his tremendous reflexes, Leno was eventually signed permanently by the BayArena outfit. The 19-year-old has guided his side into the knockout stages of the UEFA Champions League and received plaudits from various European
outfits.
These achievements prompted Leverkusen to ensure permanent hold of the shot-stopper which was later agreed upon by the Stuttgart officials.
With Adler certain to return sometime around during January, Hamburger SV have expressed interest in the 26-year-old. It is assumed that the goalie will tie knots with the rivals in favour of regular first team action.
The only thing that could prevent Adler from joining the Red Shorts is the annual wage demands of the player. The German international's wage demands are in the region of 4 million euros per year, an amount Hamburg are willing to pay.
Leverkusen manager, Robin Dutt, also confirmed of interest from Hamburg and had no intentions of retaining the former number one custodian. Instead, he wished him luck for the rest of his career and hoped that Adler won’t lose his special affection for the
club.
Adler has so far made 138 senior team league appearances for Leverkusen and additions to this number are highly unlikely. As the winter transfer window looms near, Hamburg are closing in with an official bid for the currently unfit shot stopper.
