Rene Bourque, Jaroslav Halak and Steven Stamkos named NHL’s Three Stars of the Week
The stellar play of three rising stars in the National Hockey League has earned them the honour of being the NHL’s Three Stars of the Week.
The first star was left-winger Rene Bourque of the Calgary Flames. He led the league in goals during the week of October 17-23 as he scored six and added an assist in just four games.
Half of Bourque’s goals were game-winners.
Bourque was originally signed by the Chicago Blackhawks as a undrafted free agent in 2004, after having spent four years playing for University of Wisconsin-Madison’s Badgers team. He
officially became a full-time member of the Blackhawks in 2005, and was later traded to the Calgary Flames in 2008.
St. Louis Blues goaltender Jaroslav Halak was named as the second star thanks to his superb play in the Blues’ net. He posted a record of 2-0-1, along with a 1.62 goals-against average
and a .944 save percentage.
Halak earned a shutout in overtime against the visiting Pittsburgh Penguins on Saturday, 23 October. Defenceman Erik Johnson scored the game-winner 50 seconds into overtime to give the
Blues the win.
Earning the third star honour was Tampa Bay Lightning centre Steven Stamkos. Stamkos led the league in points with four goals and five assists for a total of nine points in four games.
Last season, the 20-year-old was among the top scorers in the league after having put up totals of 51 goals and 44 assists for 95 points in 82 games. Stamkos is off to a great start this
season, and is a likely candidate to lead the Lightning in scoring once again. He is out to prove that last year’s offence-laden campaign was no fluke. In only two NHL seasons, Stamkos has amassed 74 goals and 67 assists for 141 points in 161 career games.
