The Montpellier coach has likened the new signing to the Real Madrid star but has said that the player will have a lot to live up to when the new season kicks off
A few days back, reigning French Ligue 1 champions, Montpellier Herault secured the services of Argentine striker Emanuel Herrera from Chilean side Union Espanola.
Herrera arrives at the Stade de la Mosson as a relatively unknown quantity. However, in Chile, the 25-year-old is regarded as one of the most lethal strikers in the country. Though an Argentine, Herrera made his breakthrough in the Chilean second division
side CD Concepcion.
In his first and only Primera B Chilena season, the striker scored 27 goals in 35 league matches and ended the season with 29 goals in all competitions. The striker’s prolific debut in http://www.senore.com/Football-soccer/Chile-c2871 alerted CD Union Espanola who signed the Argentine for the 2012
campaign in the Liga Chilena.
In 21 league games, the striker proved that he is the real deal after scoring 11 goals in 21 Liga Chilena games.
However, it was the Copa Libertadores where Herrera rose to prominence. Union reached the pre-quarterfinals of the competition after topping the group that contained the likes of Bolivar, http://www.senore.com/Football-soccer/Junior-c20060 and Universidad Catolica.
Though they were knocked out by the eventual finalist http://www.senore.com/Football-soccer/Boca-Juniors-c38658, Herrera’s performances had done enough to prompt Girard into signing him.
Earlier this July, the striker penned a three-year deal with the French champions and will be looking to prove that he was always the right replacement for Olivier Giroud who will now be defending the colours of English Premier League side http://www.senore.com/Football-soccer/Arsenal-c38429 next season.
While talking to the media, Girard said that Herrera reminds him of Real Madrid striker Gonzalo Higuain and added that the player will always keep in mind what Giroud achieved last season.
“I know he will be reminded of Giroud’s milestone being his replacement. We’ll have to move on quickly and erase it. He reminds me of Higuain in the game, the morphology is the same. While his game is different from that of Olivier, I have chosen him because
he can adapt to our group. He is a good football player and a good goalscorer. He can blend into our game without completely changing what we’ve done so far.”
Though the player is yet to play a game for his new side, a lot will be expected of him when the season begins.
