The Montpellier coach is convinced that his team will do well next season as they seek to defend their Ligue 1 crown against an expensively-assembled Paris Saint-Germain side
Last season, Montpellier Herault did the unconceivable by winning the Ligue 1 Championelle. La Paillade pipped Paris Saint-Germain to the title which is the first Ligue 1 crown in the club’s history.
Not many people feel that Rene Girard’s side would be able to achieve the same feat again. However, the Heraultais are still ambitious and their coach has already set goals far higher than the club is accustomed to.
While talking to media, Rene Girard said that the club needs to finish in the top five, qualify for the second round of the UEFA Champions League and win Coupe de France in order to make the next season a good one.
“Finishing in the top five in the league, getting out of the first round of the Champions League and winning the Coupe de France. I think it would make a great season.”
This summer, Paris Saint-Germain have invested heavily in the transfer market. Les Parisiens have brought in the likes of http://www.senore.com/Football-soccer/Zlatan-Ibrahimovic-c38029 to the Parc des Princes. However, Girard is not really fazed by
the arrival of so many mega stars at the Ile club.
Although the Frenchman admits that PSG have become the hottest topic in http://www.senore.com/Football-soccer/France-c2899 these days, his side has strengthened in terms of quality and quantity.
“Paris is well equipped to play for the title, good for them. They speak only of Paris, how they will be, how they will play and how they will be champions. But is us! Our group has changed very little and we have strengthened quality and quantity.”
While talking about team captain Mapou Yanga-Mbiwa, Girard admitted that there are many clubs interested in signing the Frenchman but added that it is unlikely that the player will leave the Mosson this summer.
Holding on to star players is important for the reigning French champions and after successfully being able to retain the services of Younes Belhanda, Girard would be hoping to retain Yanga-Mbiwa as well.
