Renee Montgomery leads as Connecticut Sun beat Atlanta Dream 96-87 – WNBA Recap
On Sunday night at Mohegan Sun Arena, Renee Montgomery punctuated a team high 21 points, including 13 in the first half, as Connecticut Sun snapped their two-game losing streak with a 96-87 win over the defending Eastern Conference Champions Atlanta Dream. The victory also halted the three-game winning streak of Atlanta.
Connecticut’s Tina Charles said after the game, “This was big to win this game because of the two games that we just lost on the road.”
Montgomery also dished out eight assists and stole the ball for three times. The 24-year-old guard shot 7 for 12 from the field, including 3 for 4 from three-point range, and 4 for 6 from free throw line.
Four other Connecticut players reached double figures on the night. Asjha Jones recorded a double-double with 18 points and 10 rebounds. Charles also scored 18 points, grabbed nine rebounds, dished out three assists and blocked three shots for the Sun, for which, Tan White and Kara Lawson came off the bench with 13 and 11 points, respectively.
Angel McCoughtry led all the scorers with 22 points, nine rebounds, four assists, two steals and two blocks. Erika de Souza registered a double-double with 17 points and 10 rebounds in the loss. Lindsey Harding had 14 points, nine assists and four rebounds while Armintie Price ended with 12 points, five rebounds, four steals and four rebounds.
Connecticut shot 52.8 percent (38 for 72) from the field, including 63.6 percent (7 for 11) beyond the arc, and 76.5 percent (13 for 17) from free throw line. Atlanta shot just 42.7 percent (32 for 75) from the floor, including 37.5 percent (3 for 8) from three-point range, and 71.4 percent (20 for 28) from the line. The Sun outscored the visiting team 46-36 in points in the paint.
Alison Bales scored all of her six points in the first quarter as Atlanta carried a 26-16 lead into the second frame. Connecticut outplayed the Dream 32-15 in the second quarter and converted their ten-point deficit into a 48-41 lead at halftime.
Atlanta however bounced back after the break and limited Connecticut to 18 points in the third quarter and trimmed their first half deficit to just three points, 66-63, heading into the final 10 minutes. Sun opened the fourth quarter on a 4-0 run to stretch their lead to 70-63. They carried the momentum in the period that followed and went on a win by 11 points.
