Question:

Rennes, France?

I am having a French person come live at my house from Rennes, France. I want to learn about where she lives. I live in a fairly small town, and her town is about the size of Buffalo, New York. She is 15.

So I need to know:

Anything about her town

Things to do to keep her occupied

How to make her feel home in a non-pushy way

Thanks!

  1. Well, as someone already pointed out, Rennes is located in Brittany ("Bretagne", in French). As a matter of fact it's the largest city there. You might ask her some questions about that- does she speak Breton, for instance. (Breton, a Celtic language, was traditionally the language of Brittany, and is supposedly closer to Welsh than any Latin language.) It's been dying out for years, and my guess is that a young person doesn't speak it, but you never know, and in any event she might be pleasantly surprised if you asked. Bretagne is known, among other things, for its crêpes- maybe you could eventually ask her to teach you how to make them, assuming you don't already know. As for things to do in your area, odds are that a French teenager has interests that don't differ so radically from those of an American teenager. I hope this helps a bit. Oh, and of course you can always check Wikipedia if you haven't already: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Rennes

  2. So I visited Rennes. Its not that far from the atlantic coast of Britttany. There is a university (old and new ) and a lot of international students but I suspect it is smaller than Buffalo. YOu can talk about food from this region people there eat salty crepes (with cheeses) and drink a kind of cider (cidre) wine. Many people spend the summer months there at the seaside (which is quite rocky) La Baule is a popular seaside town you can ask about.

Other regional cities of interest are Nantes which is larger about 600,000 and better connected by rail to Paris. Althoguh you can get to Rennes in 2-3 hours by TGV.

In some of the small villages nearby they make their own sea salt which is very popular in french restaraunts. You can see it in piles if you drive by the countryside.

Probably if she's 15 she's going to be more interested in whats happening where you are in terms of music, young people anyway than discussing culture too much...Maybe buy her some american cider? (Not wine, could be non alcoholic like Martinellis)
