Renowed Boxer Pacquiao Sworn In as Congressman of Sarangani Province in the Philippines
One of the modern greats in the world of boxing has entered the far more brutal political ring.
Philippines, world renowned boxer Many Pacquiao will start his newest battle which is expected to be twice as taxing as some of his fiercest bouts.
The diminutive boxer has been one of the major sports stars in his country, and has a huge fan base all over the country which led to his election in his own constituency.
Pacquiao also known as “The Pacman” amongst the boxing fraternity was sworn in on Monday as the congressman of Sarangani province in the southern part of the East Asian country.
The boxing sensation was declared winner in the congressional election race by a huge lead of 60,000 votes over his rival. His victory brought to an end the reign of a dynasty that ruled the rural province for decades.
Upon his election, a beaming Pacquaio declared that he will bring a revolution in the poor area, where people are struggling for basic amenities of life, he added that his focus will be his legislative policy on education and sports development.
"As your representative in the House of Congress, I will be your voice. We will work together to achieve our vision for Sarangani. Let us look forward to sports advancement and better benefits for athletes. Let us look forward to better education, better programs and having our own university in Sarangani" Pacquiao told the people of his locality.
The oath taking ceremony was a huge draw as people in his locality chanted slogans in his favour, and declared Pacquaio a local hero.
During the ceremony, he was flanked by other elected officials of the province, besides his wife and children.
There was huge media presence as besides the local journalists foreign TV correspondents, and newspaper reporters gathered in a big number to cover the historic event, which is being considered a significant turn of events in the history of the troubled nation, faced with economic instability.
Pacman made the revelation that he was trying to influence his political party to join the Liberal Party of president-elect Benigno Aquino, he had campaigned for Aquino's opponent for the presidential race.
The 31 year old has been an inspiration for many upcoming boxers around the world especially in his homeland.
The boxer regarded by many as the best pound for pound fighter in the world, is also a mentally sharp individual and recently took a 10-day crash course on public administration in a bid to brush up his socializing skills with fellow celebrity politicians.
The boxer has big plans for his community and has vowed to bring a real change in the lives of the people of his community and promised to build the first hospital and start livelihood programmes in his province.
The province of Sarangani is one of the poorest provinces in the country, inhabited by a population in excess of 400,000 reliant on farming and fishing.
Meanwhile Pacquaio has promised his fans that he would not end his boxing career after starting his run in politics.
The seven-division champion is in the process of working out an agreement for a much-awaited bout with fellow pound-for-pound winner Floyd Mayweather, boxing promoter Bob Arum is hoping to hold the fight in Las Vegas in November this year.
Pacquiao has won a glut of international awards from prestigious bodies all over the world; he was also given the title of Fighter of the Decade by the Boxing Writers Association of America. He also won the Fighter of the Year award for the third time. Lets hope his political career will be equally prestigious.
