The former FC Koln shot stopper has joined Werkself on a one-year deal as a back-up for club number one Bernd Leno.
The Factory Squad had been in the transfer market for a goalkeeper before the window closed at the end of the month. They have been successful in signing Michael Rensing, who was without a club after Koln were relegated at the
end of last season.
Bayer Leverkusen CEO Wolfgang Holzhauser confirmed the news on the club’s website and insisted that his side have signed one of the most experienced and talented players in the league. He admitted that the player will provide excellent
back-up to Bernd Leno throughout the course of the season.
The chief added that the side needed a good player to play the role between the sticks considering the side will be competing in as many as three competitions. Leverkusen will compete in the Bundesliga, DFB-Pokal and the UEFA Europa
League this season.
“We have acquired a goalkeeper of quality and experience who will provide excellent back-up to Bernd Leno. We are competing in three competitions this season and in that respect the transfer makes perfect sense,” he was quoted
as saying in an interview to the club’s official website.
On the other hand, sporting director Rudi Voller experienced his delight on acquiring the glovesman. He stated that the shot stopper had a great time at Koln and was one of the few positives for the team last season. He added that
Rensing’s experience can even help Leno’s development in the future.
“http://www.senore.com/Football-soccer/Michael-Rensing-c25366 was always a key player at Köln and played exceptionally well there. His experience can help Bernd Leno achieve an even higher level of performance,” the former German national team manager added.
Michael Rensing has played for the likes of Bayern Munich and FC Koln in his nine-year career thus far. The player joined FC Koln initially on a six-month offer in December 2010. However, his strong performances extended the deal
to another two years. He was released by the Billy Goats at the end of the previous campaign when they got relegated to the 2.Bundesliga.
