Rent a car on a trip to Cancun?

We have never been to Cancun before and are trying to decide if we should rent a car or not. Is the driving a lot different from here? Also we are trying to figure out if everything is close (tours, shopping, ect.) or will we be needing to take taxis around if we don't have a car?

  1. I've been to Cancun a few times and WOULD NEVER DRIVE! There does not seem any rules when driving on the roads and if you are not use to driving there I would reconmend not to. Getting around on the bus is cheap and easy with the buses running very frequenty in the Hotel Zone area. Taxis are also very easy but make sure you check the rates before u get in.

    Have fun and DON'T DRIVE!

  2. May I come with you ?

  3. Rent a car if you want to see more Maya ruins than just Chichen Itza and Tulum--your hotel can hook you up with air conditioned tour buses to get to these sites.  But there are tons more Maya ruins (see the map in the link below).  If you want to see Ek Balam or Coba, It might be easier with a car--plus you can come and go on your schedule, not when the tour bus dictates.  The toll road from Cancun to Chichen Itza is as good or better than most USA roads.  The rest of the roads on the peninsula are two lane roads comparable to any in rural America.  And driving is not difficult.  The biggest thing you have to watch out for are the speed bumps (called TOPES), which you'll see entering and leaving every little village.  if most of you time is going to be spent in Cancun, the tourist buses are the easiest and cheapest way to get around.

  4. They have a bus that will get you anywhere you want to go. We never used a taxi and we didn't rent a car.  I wouldn't rent if I were you. Driving is different over there and if you rent from the wrong place they will always find something wrong with the car and all of a sudden you owe them a lot of money.  It happens a lot.  The bus is fun and easy to take. It is not a huge place, well at least everything you will want to get to is easily accessible. If you think you would feel comfortable driving once you get there, then rent a car. I would at least have a local drive you from the airport. They drive CRAZY over there. It's like no rules apply on the road.
