Question:

Rent audition!!?

Alright, so I'm wanted to try out for a female lead in Rent in November (doesn't really matter which one) and I'm looking for a song to sing. I talked to one of the directors and she said that they didn't want people to sing something from the actual musical, but something that shows off your range. I have a pretty big range.. from low alto to high soprano (I can't give the notes, exactly) and I'm wondering if anyone knows a good Broadway song to suit it..?

Muchas gracias!

Oh, PS, If you mention Somewhere Over the Rainbow, well, I'll be very angry, haha.

  1. Try something from Chicago, an attitude song! "If your good to mama" comes to mind... heck of a song.

  2. A song that shows off both dynamic and note range is "On My Own," from Les Miserables.

You might want to figure out what your lowest and highest good notes are--it might come in handy to know them.

EDIT: Perhaps it is a bit overdone, and in any case, its singing range is not quite as wide as I remembered it.  So disregard that suggestion for now...

  3. Don't sing On My Own, it's overdone and not really suitable for RENT anyway.  Look at rock musicals - Hair, Chess, Tommy, Godspell, Children of Eden.
