I am moving to Sydney later on this year and was wanting advice - should I Rent a place of my own or Share?? I really want to rent a place of my own but have read about all the difficulties etc - I'll also be coming over for a couple of days prior to the big move to organise extra bits and pieces. And re the refeeres required - do these have to be people in Sydney? or can I provide one from NZ? Many thanks in advance :)

  1. So long as you have referees who are contactable and sound very responsible over the phone you should be fine. As for sharing, you'd have to make up your own mind about this - I myself like my own space ... but it is dearer.

  2. You won't need referees, just proof that you can pay for a place. However, the rental market in Sydney right now is an absolute joke, and it could take you longer than expected to find your own place. I've just moved house with friends (we are 4 full time professionals) and we got rejected from 8 places before we got our terrace, just because the competition was so steep. I would suggest moving into a flatshare just because it will be easier at first, even if you just use it as somewhere to get on your feet while you're looking elsewhere, and to meet some new people. There are some good websites like flatmatefinders.com that are great - I've always found good flatmates on these sites.

  3. Long as you got the cash you will be fine. Somebody will be willing to take your money
