Question:

Rental Help! My landlord has given us 2 warning about "excessive noise" as a result of the lady below us.

She said we were loud all the time, up to and including 3am. We have 2 little boys and are very careful to make sure they are quiet. At 3am the only noise is my kids walking from their room to mine because they are scared. We have offered to move to a downstairs unit and the landlord agreed--but should we have to do it all? Isn't there something that the lady downstairs should do since her complaints are based on walking around? Am I doing the right thing? Is the landlord?

  1. Try approaching the woman downstairs. Apologize even if you feel that you don't need to, and ask her to call you directly when she feels that there is "excessive noise". She'll either stop complaining OR you'll discover what is causing the noise (maybe something you didn't realize)

I lived downstairs from someone in an older 2 family house and you could hear EVERYTHING they did, and everything sounded loud. Maybe SHE should move.

  2. i would try to work with the women downstairs before you do the extreme of moving for her benefit. try putting down rugs to absorber the noise. if you are both willing to work together on this you should be able to come to a reasonable solution. Also remind her that the boys are young right now but in time they will not be scared at night and walking in to see you.

  3. I really don't see how she can hear just walking, from children, whom I am assuming isn't wearing any shoes.

I don't think you should move...it's your landlord's fault for not telling the lady that if she wants to live in 100% silence, she needs to go buy a house in a cemetary.
