I live in Seattle and I am looking for renters insurance that not only covers the basics, but the unusual such as unintentional unemployment, flood, zombie attack, whatever. Its nearly impossible to find out what's unavailable without giving someone a phone number. Any suggestions?

  1. Look around in your LOCAL area and find an independent insurance agent.  Just look in the phone book for the PIA or Big I (Trusted Choice) logos and you should be able to find an agent with several DIFFERENT companies to help you with your insurance needs.

Don't think you will find one that covers flood, however, as you will need a flood policy to cover "rising waters."

Good luck and I hope this helps!

  2. Unemployment insurance is obtained separately, usually through the government.

Flood insurance is usually obtained through the national flood insurance program.

Theft, vandalism, or fire, caused by zombies would be covered by any policy that covers all the basics.  The "basics" include fire, theft, and vandalism.  (If caused by the intentional act of an insured person, then they are not covered.)

Insurance for acts of war committed by zombies is not available due to standard exclusions of acts of war in most policies.

  3. Do you have auto insurance?  Check with that insurer first, because it may be cheaper if you buy both from the same company.

  4. I don't know of any company that offers renters insurance that covers anything but "the basics".

Call the insurance company that has your automobile coverage. Most likely you would get a multi-line discount if you took the renters policy out with them.
