Question:

Renting a car abroad?

Has anybody had any experience with renting a car abroad, having an unfortunate incident, AND RELYING on the Collision Damage Waiver from their credit card??? How did that work out? I'm debating on whether to rely on my credit card company's coverage, or to pay and extra $12/day through the car rental agency.

  1. If you rent a car in Europe, remember you have NO coverage from your US auto policy, so you have to purchase the rental car company's liability.  Only SOME credit cards cover in Europe so the only way to know if their collision damage waiver applies is to call & ask them.  No one here would know if your credit card would cover you in Europe.

  2. I rent cars in Europe often, I always use my credit cards collision Damage waiver.  I did have an accident (not my fault) years ago and the credit card coverage took care of things just fine.  Best to get and read the written rules about your credit card coverage first though.  Don't just call and have one of their clerks read you the part about the coverage.  As they say, get it in writing.
